Escolta is on the southern portion of the district of Binondo, Manila and is attached to Chinatown to the north. This area on the northern bank of the Pasig was once the property of Jose Damaso Gorricho and Ciriaca Santos of Imus, Cavite. The Cortejo developed when Binondo, beginning in the last quarter of the 19th century, became Manila’s premier business district. Binondo experienced commercial and economic growth with stores and business offices of British, American, German, and French companies opening there.
